As companies become more dependent on digital tools and programming the data that power them becomes an increasingly important element. In many cases the storage of data and communication play a crucial role in the relationships between businesses with their clients, customers, and other partners. If the data is lost or compromised this can rob those parties of trust, and result in business loss.

To ensure that important data is not lost, enterprises must have a reliable communication and data storage platform. The platforms must be able to process massive amounts of real-time data and have the capacity to store it indefinitely. Additionally, they must allow data to be easily accessed by any system that require it.

There are two main kinds of data storage: direct area and network-based. Direct area storage, also known as direct-attached storage (DAS) is stored on hardware that’s directly connected to the computer which accesses it. Examples include hard disk drives, USB flash drives, optical discs, and solid-state drives such as compact discs or digital video discs. DAS devices are more expensive than networked storage for data however they offer more access to data and greater local backup capabilities.

Data storage that is network-based is performed on servers connected to a network. This typically happens in a datacenter. This type of storage allows for more information sharing, and offers better redundancy and disaster protection than DAS. It can be more affordable depending on the chosen storage solution. Common solutions include network-attached storage (NAS) storage area networks (SAN) and object storage platforms.
